Title : Effect of hesperidin powder on growth performance, blood parameters and antioxidant capacity of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) fingerling

Abstract:

Promoting nutritional strategies for sustainable aquaculture is one of the priorities of this fast-growing industry. In this context, the application of functional feeds with immunomodulatory properties is an interesting approach in order to reduce the use of antimicrobials. Synthetic hesperidin powder contains bioactive compounds of flavanone glycoside, which is a flavonoid and can play an effective role in preventing all kinds of diseases due to the elimination of free radicals in the body. Hesperidin can be extracted with a high concentration of citrus fruits, at the same time, the consumption of this compound will not bring any toxic effects or side effects. Its antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and most of its antioxidant and anticancer properties have been confirmed in various studies. Considering that there has been no research on the effects of hesperidin powder on Cyprinus carpio, this study was designed. This experiment is in the form of four food ration treatments, including the control treatment: basic food, T2: 100 mg of hesperidin, the third treatment: 200 mg. were tested for 56 days, and after then, key performance indicators associated to growth and feed performance were evaluated in addition to several hematological, and non-specific immune and antioxidative stress biomarkers. Results from this study revealed that additives were able to enhance somatic growth and feed efficiency, as well as promoting systemic non-specific immune and antioxidant responses, even though their effects were magnified when administered. Thus, this study showed for first the first time that the administration of hesperidin is a valid strategy for its use in functional feeds.

Keywords: Common carp, hesperidin, serum immunity, oxidative status.
