Title : The practice of fish farming in improving the food quality of the population of the DWE sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Abstract:
The Democratic Republic of Congo is a post-conflict country whose macroeconomic framework is currently stabilized, the economy relatively revived without much impact 80 improving the standard of living of the populations, especially those in the vulnerable category. Thus, among the many problems facing the country and in particular the inhabitants of the Dwe sector, that of food is worrying and fundamental because it affects one of the essential functions of life, fish farming seems to be a solution for the animal protein supply, as highlighted by Link and Starck (1981). The importance of this subject is due to the fact that the inhabitants of the Dwe sector practice traditional fish farming, for lack of supervision and the necessary materials, their performance remains low. A questionnaire was developed and used to collect the information sought. The work is done using two methods, field surveys and documentary consultation. Our surveys were conducted across 13 villages with a total of 80 fish farmers using 592 ponds. The results of our research reveal that 83.4% of ponds are mixed crops, farmers are more interested in polyculture so that when emptying they can harvest several species of fish. In all thirteen villages of the Dwe sector, we have identified a total of 80 fish farmers, the stocking depends on the financial means available to each fish farmer. The revenue generated is oriented 31 fish farmers 38.6% self-consumption; 25 fish farmers or 31.3% schooling of children, 13 or 16.3% medical care and 11 fish farmers or 13.8% for other purposes. This study must continue for all sectors of the Democratic Republic of Congo with the support of partners because the practice of traditional fish farming allows the population to obtain the animal proteins necessary for good growth.
