Title : The role of traditional ecological knowledge (tek) in the restoration of fish processing implement under the background of cultural sustainability in Lake Chad basin area, Borno state, Nigeria

Abstract:

Traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) is a cumulation of a body of knowledge, belief and practice, continuously passing over from one generation to the other acquired through cultural transmission about the relationship of living being with one another and with the environment by local indigenous and descendants’ communities through adaptive processes over hundreds to thousands of years. Thus, traditional ecological knowledge is both cumulative and dynamic building on experience and adapting to changes. The study has been undertaken with the main objective of examining the role of traditional ecological knowledge in the restoration of fish processing implement under the background of cultural sustainability with specific objectives of determination of the level of contribution of traditional ecological knowledge in the process of management and conservation of resources and assessing the environmental preservation practices involves in the transformation of fish processing implement. The result reveals fisher’s traditional ecological knowledge has explored personal, moral and environmental dimensions in making amends to their kin through the act of restoration. The traditional ecological knowledge of the fishers has contributed in sustaining the culture of fish processing implement but there has been a problem of cultural adaptation and policy implication in the transformation processes thus recommendation has been made for its restoration and subsquent attainment of culturally sustainable fish processing implement in the study area.

Dr. Babagana Zanna holds Doctorate Degree in Fisheries Economics, Master of Science in Economics, Post Graduate Diploma in Education, Bachelor of Science in Economics, Diploma Accountancy and a Graduate Diploma Computing and Data Processing and Doctor of Philosophy (awaiting result). Have thirty Academic Publications and a Fellow; Institute of Professional Managers and Administrators of Nigeria, Fellow, Institute of Chartered Economists of Nigeria and a former Developing Country Member of the International Institute of Fisheries Economics and Trade, USA and a Registered Professional Member of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria.
