Title : Water quality in the watershed of the Oued Rhiou region

Abstract:

The Gargar dam located 5 km from the town of Oued Rhiou Wilaya of Relizane, is part of the region's watershed which extends over an area of ??2900 km2

This site has undergone repopulation with 2,800,000 fry of different species of carp, the annual fishing production amounts to 594 tonnes.

A water sampling campaign carried out made it possible to check the quality of the water.  These samples taken during the months of January, February, March and April gave an overview of the water quality for two seasons.  In addition, this distribution makes it possible to assess the impact of agricultural activities and the influence of permanent discharges during periods of high water levels and thus evaluate their impact on the growth of species.

Different physicochemical and bacteriological parameters were studied, Analysis of pH, MES, Turbidity, salinity, NO3, NO2, NH4, PO4, MO, COD and BOD. The bacteriological analysis focused on the enumeration of coliforms, streptococci, sulphite-reducers and mesophiles. Considering the results obtained from the analyses, it appears that the water samples are generally of good quality for the parameters PO4, NO3, NO2 and MO. On the other hand, the measurements of the turbidity and MES parameters demonstrate poor quality; this situation can be correlated with discharges from Oued Cheliff during heavy rains. As for bacteriological analyses, there is indeed an indication of contamination of fecal origin most likely linked to wastewater discharges.

Keywords: Gargar dam, physicochemical parameters, bacteriological analyses, irrigation basin.

Audience take-away:

  • The importance of continental ecosystems
  • The fundamental role of limnic zones and their physicochemical impact on the growth of organisms that live there
  • The impact of the results obtained can explain the different life cycles of freshwater organisms
  • Find explanations for the different adaptations of organisms as well as pollution problems
  • This study provides real data on the impact of physicochemical parameters on the different organisms living in a limnic biotope
