Title : A preliminary investigation into the possibility of domestication of solafunmi (sierrathrissa leonensis) as an aquarium fish for ornamental purpose
Abstract:
The need to improve mental health/wellbeing is very essential in overall improvement of human performance which Ornamental fisheries is fulfilling using Aquarium fish viewing as a means, apart from its aesthetic and recreational purposes. Solafunmi a trade name given to Sierrathrissa leonensis, a freshwater fish by the domesticator for Ornamental purposes, commonly called Clupeid (English: West Africa pygmy herring), harvested from a drying stream when moving in schools after being driven to a confined area using scoop net, pale to brown colour in natural habitat. Anti-stress was administered and acclimatised. Twenty fish was introduced into glass Aquarium (with 10 litres of water) in triplicate without aerator, formulated feed was administered and accepted by the fish under these average (range) conditions: Water: pH 6.72 (5.9 - 7.5), Temperature- 18.6 0C (16 – 21.5 0C), Dissolved Oxygen- 6.27 mgl-l (5.93- 6.58 mgl-l), Conductivity- 309.667 µs/cm (173.3 - 370.5 µs/cm), Room Temperature- 23.9 0C (22 – 27.5 0C) and with high survival rate- 18.67 (18 - 19), that is 93 35 0/0, actively moving in groups, non-aggression and very hardy, thus, highly recommended as an Aquarium fish. Further researches on biology, feed, reproduction and other developments are ongoing to make it a better Aquarium fish.
