Title : Relationship between shapes and glass thicknesses on water holding capacity of 60 litres aquaria

Abstract:

Glass thicknesses and shapes of 60 Litres (L) glass aquaria was studied. Designed glass aquaria were constructed (3 mm, 4 mm and 5 mm glass thicknesses) for shapes (Tower, Prism and Cuboid) in triplicate and tested for leakages. Water was introduced into each aquarium and monitored under room condition for 49 days. Failure occurred in 3 mm for all the shapes. 4 mm and 5 mm failed in Prism and Tower shaped, during and shortly after filing without a significant difference (p > 0.05). Cuboid shaped retained water, without significant difference (p > 0.05) between 4 mm and 5 mm. A significant difference occurred (p < 0.05) in water holding ability by various aquaria shapes and thicknesses of glass. 4 mm and 5 mm are recommended for the construction of Cuboid shaped 60 L glass aquarium considering customers’ financial ability for a choice. This will minimize loss of time, money, manpower and materials and increases healthiness, job creation and wealth for the people. Further researches should be carried out on other glass thicknesses, shapes and volumes to meet the existing demand.
