Title : Sustainable aquaculture and fisheries, and biodiversity status fresh water fish in Bangladesh

Abstract:

The aquatic resource of Bangladesh belongs to a. Inland Open Water (Capture): River and Estuary, Sundarbans, Floodplains, Beel, and Kaptai Lake b. Inland Close Water (Culture): Pond, Seasonal cultured waterbody, Baor, Shrimp, Prawn and crab Farm, Pen Culture and Cage Culture c. Marine Fisheries Industrial and Artisanal. Data and information sources are used from the direct interview with individual, publication of the Department of Fisheries, internet and related grey literature. The country has an inland water area of about 4.72 mill.ha and about 710 km long coastal belt. Fisheries sector contributes 2.08% to the national GDP, 21.83% to the agricultural GDP and more than 1.05% to the total export earnings. The total fish production was crossed by producing 4.759mil.mt in 2021-22. The growth performance from inland aquaculture shows a moderate increased trend. The total fish production was increased about six times more (0.754 mil.mt to 4.769 mil.mt) during the last 39 years (Fig.1) and regression type was Exponential and the equation was y= 0.6437e0.0541x (R2=0.9922). Bangladesh is well enrich freshwater fish biodiversity status is existing in Bangladesh. Fresh water fish species number is recorded 260, exotic fish species 12, marine fish

species 486, fresh and marine shrimp species 48, tortoise 36 and crab 12, respectively (FRSS2018-19). From biodiversity view point, figure 2 shows important 03 fishes were Extinct (E), 07 Critically endangered (CR), 30 Endangered (E), 25 Vulnerable status (VU), 27 Lower risk (LR), 122 Least Concern (LC) and 42 Data Deficient (DD) position in fresh water fishes (IUCN 2020). In recent years, the ecosystem of fisheries resources have been facing with challenges posed by numerous natural and anthropogenic causes such as climate change, natural disaster, environmental pollution, industrialization, overfishing, using destructive fishing gears, pesticide and agrochemicals. So, more important national program and biological management technology would be developed for aquaculture and open water management to restrict the declination of resources and enhance production.

Keywords: Ecosystem, Aquatic resources, Biodiversity, Production, Extinct, Natural and Anthropogenic.
